3.5 Visiting a Place of Worship (Guided Exposure)

Activity

This activity invites participants to observe respectfully a place of worship from another religious tradition.

Rather than comparison or debate, the focus is on posture, presence, and listening—noting what worship looks like, how meaning is expressed, and how worldview shapes practice.

Why This Activity Matters

Many believers have never set foot inside a place of worship outside their own tradition.

This activity helps participants notice:

  • How deeply worldview shapes daily life and devotion
  • How worship practices reflect what people believe about God, humanity, and reality
  • Their own internal reactions—curiosity, discomfort, compassion, or confusion The goal is understanding and humility, not evaluation.

How This Activity Is Used in CCC

Visiting a place of worship works best:

  • After some biblical and worldview grounding
  • With smaller groups
  • When paired with prayerful reflection afterward This activity is especially meaningful when participants already have some awareness of God’s heart for the nations and the state of the world.

How to Run the Activity

Choose a place of worship that is:

  • Accessible and welcoming to visitors

  • Within reasonable travel distance

  • Appropriate for quiet observation Before visiting, set expectations clearly:

  • You are guests

  • You are there to observe and learn

  • You are not there to participate in rituals unless explicitly invited and conscience permits For Hindu temples, use the Visiting a Hindu Temple guide as your primary reference.

What to Pay Attention To

As participants observe, encourage them to notice:

  • The atmosphere and use of space
  • The role of objects, symbols, or rituals
  • How people engage personally or communally
  • What seems most meaningful to worshippers Participants should avoid taking photos or notes during worship unless explicitly permitted.

Debrief & Reflection

Do not skip debriefing. This is where learning takes shape.

Starter Questions

  • What did you notice first?

  • What felt most unfamiliar or surprising? Deeper Reflection Questions

  • What does this form of worship suggest about how people understand God?

  • What longings or hopes did you observe being expressed?

  • How did this experience affect the way you think about people of this faith?

  • What emotions surfaced in you during the visit? Gospel Reflection

  • What might “good news” sound like to someone shaped by this worldview?

  • How does this experience help you listen more carefully before speaking?

Facilitator Posture

As the facilitator:

  • Emphasize humility and restraint
  • Normalize discomfort without rushing to interpret it
  • Keep the group focused on observation, not conclusions
  • Encourage prayerful reflection after leaving the site This activity is formative precisely because it resists easy answers.

A Note on Other Places of Worship

At this time, CCC includes a detailed guide for visiting a Hindu temple.

If you plan to visit:

  • A mosque

  • A synagogue

  • Another place of worship Use the same posture and principles:

  • Prepare ahead of time

  • Dress modestly

  • Observe respectfully

  • Debrief thoughtfully Additional guides (such as mosque visit resources from Crescent Project or similar partners) may be added in the future.

Final Note

If participants leave this activity:

  • More patient listeners
  • More aware of worldview differences
  • More prayerful toward those they encountered Then the visit has served its purpose.
